On Friday, October 28th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Noel Kilkenny, Consul General of Ireland, fellow elected officials and leaders in the Irish community for Emerald Isle Immigration Center’s Annual Dinner Dance. The celebration honored: John (Jack) T. Ahern – Business Manager & Financial Secretary of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 30, Michael Cusick – New York State Assembly Member – 63rd District, and Patrick Burke – Co-owner Courtyard Ale House & Brickyard Gastropub NYC.
On Friday, October 28th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined faculty, and students at PS 199 in Sunnyside, for a dedication ceremony cutting the ribbon on the newly renovated playground.
On Thursday, October 27th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined fellow elected officials and community members at the Empire State Pride Agenda’s Fall Dinner at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers to celebrate winning marriage equality for LGBT New Yorkers, and celebrate the organization’s 20th anniversary. On Wednesday, October 26th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined his colleague, Council Member Julissa Ferreras and friends for her birthday/masquerade reception at Don Coqui, in Astoria, which featured great food and music.
On October 26th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer addressed community residents and activists at Woodside Neighborhood Association’s Town Hall meeting held at St. Sebastian's Parish Center.
Council Member Van Bramer, who has strong roots in Woodside, stressed the importance of civic engagement and highlighted the considerable work that he has done in collaboration with the community, including the expansion of his graffiti removal program, repaving of crucial roadways and an allocation of $350,000 to improve park space. At the meeting, Van Bramer also announced that Woodside residents will have a nice surprise this holiday season, because he was able to secure additional funding to extend the holiday lights on Skillman Avenue further into Woodside.
As Chair of the Cultural Affairs and Libraries, the Council Member has always been vocal about his unwavering support of our city’s libraries and has been a champion for Woodside Library. Thanks to a funding allocation of $125,000 from Van Bramer, teens at the library will now have a technologically updated and renovated teen room where they can relax, read and learn.
On October 26th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended Claret Wine Bar's Second Annual Fundraiser for Haiti relief efforts that was organized by owner and fellow Sunnyside resident Jean Clancy. All funds raised will go to Concern Worldwide’s programs for Haiti relief. Last year's event raised over $10,000 for water purification efforts in the country.
On October 26th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer was a guest presenter at PS 70, in Astoria for their fall career day where he spoke to three classes of first, third and fifth grade students, including his nephew's class. A graduate of PS 70, and a strong supporter of our public schools, Van Bramer explained how the New York City government works and stressed the importance of a good education.
On October 25th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg to cut the ribbon at New York City Center’s reopening ceremony and gala, which unveiled the stunning renovations recently completed. Each year, New York City Center hosts many incredible companies from around the city including the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and American Ballet Theatre.

On Monday, October 24th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined fellow elected officials and LGBT senior advocates at Gotham Hall for the SAGE Awards and Gala, which honored individuals who have been at the helm of the movement for decades and continue to provide vision and leadership. On Monday, October 24th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Metropolitan Museum of Art President Emily Rafferty, Speaker Christine Quinn, and fellow elected officials at a breakfast reception and press conference to officially cut the ribbon for the new galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and later South Asia.
