On Wednesday, October 5th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined students, parents and staff at IS 125 in Woodside to donate supplies from his 2nd Annual Back to School Supply Drive for local schools. This year, the Council Member’s drive received over 4,000 items that were donated by community members. The items were dropped off at five libraries throughout District 26 and his district office at 47-01 Queens Boulevard. The items included book bags, writing materials, rulers, and much more!
Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended the wedding of Janice Velten and Patrice Pfirmann of Sunnyside, who have been together for over 24 years. The Council Member, who has known the couple for many years, was delighted to be a part of their union, and celebrate the victory of Marriage Equality in New York.
On Monday, October 3rd, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer spoke at the 11th Annual Queens Library Foundation Gala in Long Island City. As a former employee of the Queens Library for 11 years, and Chair of the Cultural Affairs and Libraries Committee, the Council Member has fought in the Council to make the Queens Library system one of the best by working to restore over $23 million to its services, and over $80 million to libraries throughout the city this year. In addition, the Council Member allocated $150,000 to the Broadway Library’s teen reading room, $150,000 to the Woodside Library’s children’s room, and $2 million to the new Hunters Point Library. Overall, the Council Member and the Council have restored over $150 million to New York City Libraries over the last two years.
On Monday, October 3rd, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined students from PS 199 and community members to kick off his Noonan Park Community Design Initiative in Sunnyside. Council Member Van Bramer has secured $600,000 in order to redesign Noonan Park’s Playground. In an effort to increase transparency and community input in the playground’s design process, Van Bramer will be the first elected official to ask the community for their vision for the design of a public space.
Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined community members and staff at the Emerald Isle Immigration Center in Woodside for an information session explaining naturalization eligibility requirements, the naturalization process, and the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.
On Thursday, September 29th, New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Congressman Joe Crowley and State Senator Michael Gianaris today announced that short-term metered parking is being added and parking regulations are being adjusted along Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside to make parking more accessible for motorists, especially the customers of local businesses lining the corridor.

On September 27th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Principal Yvonne Leimsider and PTA president, James Adams in kicking off the start of school in Dutch Kills at IS 204’s first PTA meeting of the year. At the meeting, Van Bramer announced his capital funding allocation of $50,000 for 2011.
On Tuesday, September 27th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Theater Communications Group and actresses Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent) and Cynthia Harris (Mad About You) on the steps of City Hall to kick off “Free Night NYC 2011,” offering a month of free tickets to various theatrical performances Off-Broadway and independent theater across the five boroughs. The program is made possible through organizations such as the Alliance of Resident Theaters and City Arts Magazine. On Tuesday, September 27th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined board members, staff and kids for the ribbon cutting of the new Children's Museum of Art in lower Manhattan. As the Chair of the Cultural Affairs Committee, the Council Member praised the new 10,000 square foot facility that will give kids in New York City from all different backgrounds the chance to express their artistic capabilities.
On Monday, September 26th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer held an oversight hearing at City Hall on the impact of pop-up art installations in vacant spaces throughout New York City. As Chair of the Cultural Affairs Committee, the Council Member believes the installations provide a beneficial relationship between artists, real estate partners and the community.
