On Monday, December 12th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer announced a relief drive for the victims of the tragic fire that occurred at 40-38 61st Street, in Woodside on November 18th. The 2-alarm blaze destroyed the two-story house at 40-38 61st Street and significantly damaged the adjacent homes. Tragically, the fire claimed the life of one victim, injured four others and forced the families from their homes. There were 25 people living at the location, including 4 children and babies. With the holidays approaching, Council Member Van Bramer is calling on the community to help these families during their time of need. The Council Member has partnered with the Red Cross and local Pastor Daniel Gilland for a relief drive to aid the victims who lost everything in the fire.
On Sunday, December 11th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined fellow city, state, and federal elected officials at Congressman Joe Crowley's Annual Holiday Celebration at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Council Member Van Bramer took part in singing carols as part of the evening's festivities. On December 9th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer brought senior executives from NYCHA to listen to concerns of the TA presidents and to visit several apartments where residents had brought complaints to the Council Member at Ravenswood Houses, Queensbridge Houses and Woodside Houses. During the walkthrough, Council Member Van Bramer listened to concerns from President of Woodside Tenants Association Annie Cotton-Morris, President of the Ravenswood Residents Association Carol Wilkins and President of the Queensbridge Tenant Association Pam Thrower.
On December 8th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined owners Donna and David Drimer at Matted LIC in Long Island City for the opening celebration for the new exhibit "OMNIBUS: Diverse Images of a Fragmented World" featuring the work of Naomi Grossman, Jack Sundquist, Dominique DiMaggio, Jordan Spilman, and Earl Swanigan.
On December 8th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined kids and community residents in Long Island City to celebrate the holidays with the annual tree lighting ceremony at the Vernon Mall, on Vernon Boulevard between 51st and 52nd Avenues, sponsored by the Hunters Point Community Development Corporation.
On December 8th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined President Jerry Walsh, 114th Precinct Deputy Inspector Stephen Cirabisi and community members for the Dutch Kill Civic Association's annual holiday party. Earlier in the week, Council Member Van Bramer rallied with neighbors to protest placard abuse in Dutch Kills.
On December 7th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Ms. Teresa Mendez in celebrating her newly cleaned, mold-free home in the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Woodside Houses Development. Not long ago, the same apartment was covered in mold and had become unlivable. After being unable to get results for over a year on her own, Ms. Mendez reached out to the Council Member’s office for help. Council Member Van Bramer personally visited the Mendez residence and saw the unacceptable living conditions. Thanks to the actions of the Council Member and his staff, NYCHA responded and the cause of the mold has been determined and fixed. Once the mold was removed, the apartment was freshly cleaned and painted. In addition, the family was given new cabinets and a new refrigerator.
